Facts about the Park

Sengsengebirge The 20.825 hectares of the National Park Kalkalpen offer a marvellous view of a massiv mountain chain (Sengsengebirge) with its highest peak at 1963 m and gentle hills (Reichraminger Hintergebirge) with extensive forests and sparkling springs. The dry and rocky deserts at high altitudes are connected with the springs of the valleys by subterranean paths and caves. The limestone causes this phenomenon, called “Karst”. The National Park Kalkalpen is the biggest forest area in Austria protected by law.

The National Park Kalkalpen is one of the largest mountain forest regions of the Northern Kalkalpen without residential zones. Natural vegetation on a thick, healthy soil cover, which filters and stores water, are the condition for the clean and refreshing springs of the National Park.
